From a Son’s Eyes to the Stars: Why I Wrote "Beyond Earth"

Bridging the gap between the bicycle era and the lunar landing.

Space exploration is often measured in thrust, velocity, and distance. We talk about the kilometers traveled to Mars or the speed of a rocket leaving the atmosphere. But for me, the story of Indian space exploration has always been measured in something different: the quiet dedication of the people on the ground.

Writing Beyond Earth: The Indian Space Journey was not just a literary project for me; it was a personal duty.

A Personal Legacy My inspiration comes from home. My father, the late Sri A. Gopala Iyer, served at ISRO for over three decades. Growing up, I didn't just read about ISRO’s achievements in the newspapers—I lived in the atmosphere of their innovation and commitment.

Through him, I came to know the spirit of a generation of scientists and engineers who built a world-class space programme not with endless budgets, but with endless ingenuity. These were the pioneers who transported rocket parts on bicycles and converted church buildings into control centers—stories that became the folklore of my childhood and the foundation of our nation's pride.

Bridging the Past and Future I realized that while the world knows about India’s recent triumphs—like the landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar south pole—many have forgotten the humble, difficult steps that got us there.

I wrote this book to bridge that gap. I wanted to document the journey from those early days of sounding rockets to our current era of Gaganyaan and space stations.

More Than Just History Beyond Earth is more than a history book. It is a tribute to the Indian spirit of "can-do." It is a reminder that looking up at the stars is the best way to lift ourselves up on Earth.

As we stand on the brink of sending humans to space on our own rockets, I hope this book serves as a reminder of where we came from, and more importantly, how far we can go.

I am proud to present my latest work"Beyond Earth: The Indian Space Journey."

This narrative chronicles the remarkable trajectory of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)tracing the arc from transporting rocket components on bicycles to mastering the complexities of lunar landings. It is a testament to how vision, resilience, and indigenous technology have not only reached the stars but actively improved life for millions on Earth.
